The month begins with a magnificent roster of firework displays to mark Guy Fawkes Night. Then, Christmas markets and events return to offer heaps of family fun and more. From a ride on the Polar Express to a trail through the grounds of one of Devon’s most famous castles, here are the dates that need adding to your diary.
BONFIRE NIGHT (5th-6th)
There are mesmerising displays taking place across Devon, from pubs and villages to larger shows at towns and showgrounds. There aren’t many locations where you can celebrate Bonfire Night with colourful fireworks bursting over serene riverside and ocean settings. The best events include Fireworks Night at Exeter Golf and Country Club, Bonfire Night on The Hoe in Plymouth, Dartmouth Bonfire Night, and Kingsbridge Bonfire Night.
EXETER CHRISTMAS MARKET (18th Nov-18th Dec)
Exeter’s magnificent cathedral will be hosting its Christmas Market from Thursday 18th November to Saturday 18th December. This award-winning staple of the city’s festive calendar enjoys a wonderful atmosphere and showcases an impressive range of suppliers, both local and from further afield. CHRISTMAS AT PENNYWELL FARM (19th Nov-24th Dec)
Immerse yourself in a magical experience at Pennywell Farm from Friday 19th November right up to Christmas Eve. The multi-award-winning attraction is the largest of its kind in the South West and lies just outside Totnes. It will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with North Pole, Elves Sweetshop, Father Christmas, and a whole lot more. THE POLAR EXPRESS (20th Nov-23rd Dec)
South Devon Railway will be transformed across dates from Saturday 20th November to Thursday 23rd December, when it welcomes the iconic Polar Express steam engine to its scenic tracks. Once onboard, you’ll meet the friendly crew as you make your way to the North Pole, where passengers will meet Santa and his elves. As well as the train ride, you can enjoy Christmas food stalls, an exciting pre-show before departure, and a trip to Santa’s workshop. Get tickets here.
CHRISTMAS AT THE CASTLE (29th Nov)
Powderham Castle, near Exeter, will be alive with festive cheer from Monday 29th November and throughout December. Marvel at the light walk, which extends for over a mile through the gardens and grounds. The castle itself will be open this year and decorated with lights, displays, and storytelling features. The trail leads to a Secret Garden filled with animal friends and activities, and to the Potting Shed where warm refreshments await. The Christmas Barn hosts a vibrant market and entertainment, while the Grotto is where you’ll find the big man in red. Find out more here.
