Here’s a look at some of the best things to see and do across the county during December.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1st-31st)
The award-winning Le Navet Bete performing arts group is back in Exeter this festive season. Having previously showcased captivating renditions of Treasure Island and The Three Musketeers, the company turns to one of the most popular ghost stories for Christmas. A Christmas Carol is packed with rib-tickling comic twists and a reimagining of iconic characters. Get tickets at Exeter Northcott Theatre here.
EXETER CHRISTMAS MARKET (1st-18th)
Exeter’s magnificent cathedral will be hosting its Christmas Market from the beginning of the month, right up to Saturday 18th December. This award-winning staple of the city’s festive calendar enjoys a wonderful atmosphere and showcases an impressive range of suppliers, both local and from further afield. KINGSBRIDGE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS (4th)
Kingsbridge town square will host a farmers market set-up, complete with stalls lining Fore Street, a visit from Santa, and a fantastic roster of live entertainment. This year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet, providing the perfect opportunity to soak up the festivities and get your shopping done early. Stallholders from across Devon will be selling hot food and a wide variety of gifts.
CHRISTMAS AT THE CASTLE
Powderham Castle, near Exeter, will be alive with festive cheer throughout December. Marvel at the light walk, which extends for over a mile through the gardens and grounds. The castle itself will be open this year and decorated with lights, displays, and storytelling features. The trail leads to a Secret Garden filled with animal friends and activities, and to the Potting Shed where warm refreshments await. The Christmas Barn hosts a vibrant market and entertainment, while the Grotto is where you’ll find the big man in red. Find out more here.
PLYMOUTH CHRISTMAS MARKET (2nd-19th)
Get your presents for loved ones sorted while getting into the festive spirit at Plymouth Christmas Market. The heart of the city centre hosts an open-air bar, tasty food and drink, and an array of artisan stalls selling unique gifts. THE POLAR EXPRESS (2nd-23rd)
South Devon Railway will be transformed across dates from Thursday 2nd to Thursday 23rd December when it welcomes the iconic Polar Express steam engine to its scenic tracks. Once onboard, you’ll meet the friendly crew as you make your way to the North Pole, where passengers will meet Santa and his elves. As well as the train ride, you can enjoy Christmas food stalls, an exciting pre-show before departure, and a trip to Santa’s workshop. Get tickets here.
