From dizzying climbing routes to high octane theme park rides, here are some of the highlights.
VIA FERRATA, HALVASSO
Ascend imposing cliff faces and scale high rise bridges as you face your fears at Via Ferrata. The name originates from the First World War; a ‘Via Ferrata’ is a climbing route featuring metal steps, ladders, zip wires, suspension bridges… just about everything you need to get those hairs standing on end. You don’t need to jet off to the Alps though, as they’ve managed to squeeze all these activities in at Goodygrane Activity Centre, near Falmouth.
Once the day is done, head to the Chain Locker on Falmouth’s historic quayside to refuel with delicious food paired with enviable views over the harbour and the tranquil Carrick Roads sailing waters.
HANGLOOSE ADVENTURE, EDEN PROJECT
Experience the Eden Project’s iconic biomes with a bird’s eye view at Hangloose Adventure. There are seven adrenaline activities here, including the longest and fastest zip wire in England which catapults you 660 metres at speeds of up to 60mph. Soaring high above the site, it’s said by many who have taken the leap it to be the closest experience they have had to flying.
Once you’ve satisfied your fix, replenish with a delicious bite to eat and a pint of our award-winning beer at the Holmbush Inn. This lively and friendly traditional pub is a short drive away in St Austell.
ADRENALINE QUARRY, LISKEARD
While we can’t guarantee you’ll cross paths with the mythical Beast of Bodmin Moor, which is probably for the best, scares are sure to be found at Liskeard’s Adrenaline Quarry. Perched on the edge of the moor, this attraction promises rides and experiences that will put your nerves to the test. A 90m-long, 50m-high zip wire will have you hurtling off a cliff and over a deep-water quarry at 40mph.
If that sounds tame, have a go at defying gravity on the giant swing that takes all who brave it from sky-high to freefall in a matter of seconds. You’ll also find a wipeout obstacle course, go-karting, axe throwing, and open water swimming.
Daring families with an appetite for adventure flock to Flambards’ collection of more than 30 theme park rides and attractions throughout the year. The most popular rides include The Hornet roller coaster; a vertical twisting stomach-churner, Skyraker; and the Colorado River log flume. If you’re feeling really brave, put your nerves to the test on Sky-Force, the South West’s first ‘white-knuckle ride’.
The picturesque fishing town of Porthleven is a short drive away, where you’ll find the Harbour Inn, a must for comfy rooms and a bite to eat. While it offers a gentler pace during fine weather, the harbour is a dramatic spot for storm watching. Sink into a window seat and take it all in.
KERNOW ADVENTURE PARK, NEAR FALMOUTH
One of Cornwall’s former granite quarries has been transformed into a hidden activity centre that offers the thrills and spills of a ‘total wipeout’ aquapark. Now flooded and flanked by steep walls of the rock that brought workers here all those years ago, Kernow Adventure Park at Kessel Quarry is a go-to for wakeboarding, high-speed inflatable ring rides, and those all-important, hilarious obstacle courses.
